About this trip

Three nights in Rwanda, built to sit on the end of a Kenya safari rather than replace one.

Volcanoes National Park is under three hours by road from Kigali, and Kigali is about an hour and a half by air from Nairobi. That combination is what makes this work on limited time. You land, transfer the same afternoon, trek the following morning, and you are back in Nairobi on day four.

Gorilla trekking is the most physically demanding thing we arrange. The walk can take anywhere from around two hours to most of a day, on steep ground that is often wet.

Highlights
  • One hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family
  • Under three hours from Kigali to the park, with no domestic flight
  • Golden monkey tracking as an optional half day
  • Kigali, including the Genocide Memorial
  • Designed to attach to a Kenya safari without restructuring it
Itinerary

Day by day

  1. 1
    Day 1

    Nairobi to Kigali

Fly to Kigali, around an hour and a half. Meet your guide and transfer to Musanze, near Volcanoes National Park, arriving in the afternoon. Briefing on the trek, an early dinner and an early night.

  2. 2
    Day 2

    Gorilla trek

An early start for the park briefing, where groups are assigned to a gorilla family. Trackers have been out since first light, so the guides know roughly where you are heading. One hour with the family. Return to the lodge in the afternoon to rest.

  3. 3
    Day 3

    Golden monkeys or Kigali

Either golden monkey tracking in the morning, a shorter and gentler walk than the gorillas, or an earlier return to Kigali with time at the Genocide Memorial and the city.

  4. 4
    Day 4

    Return to Nairobi

Transfer to Kigali International Airport for the flight back to Nairobi, or onward.

Questions

Frequently asked

How fit do I need to be?
Fit enough to walk uphill for a couple of hours on uneven ground, possibly in rain. You do not need to be an athlete. Porters are available and strongly recommended, and hiring one puts money directly into the communities around the park.
Is there an age limit?
Yes. The minimum age is 15.
How far ahead should we book?
Permits are capped daily and peak-season dates sell out many months ahead, particularly June to September. The earlier we know your dates, the better your options.
Are there reduced permit rates?
Reduced rates apply to eligible East African Community citizens and qualifying African residents. Documentation is checked. Conditions vary, including by travel period, so we confirm eligibility when we quote.
Can we combine this with a Kenya safari?
That is what it is designed for. Tell us your Kenya dates and we will build this around them.
