Family and Group Safaris

Trips built around who is coming

Families and groups need different planning from couples. Drive lengths, room arrangements, meal times and the pace of each day must work for the youngest and least mobile person in the party.

This is straightforward to get right and easy to get wrong. Most of it is decided before you travel rather than on the road.

Travelling With Children

Tell us the children's ages when you enquire. Lodges set their own age policies, some restrict young children on game drives, and family-room arrangements vary considerably.

A private vehicle is worth having with children. It means you can stop when they need to stop and return to camp when they have had enough, without other guests waiting.

We keep drives shorter and build in time at the pool. Parks closer to Nairobi, the Rift Valley lakes and the coast usually work better than long transfers north.

Gorilla trekking has a minimum age of 15 in Uganda and Rwanda.

Speak to a travel clinic about malaria precautions for children well before travel.

Things Children Tend to Like

Nairobi National Park, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Nairobi Nursery, the Giraffe Centre, boat trips at Naivasha, walking on Crescent Island, camel rides at the coast and snorkelling where age and confidence allow.

The Nairobi Nursery is the one to plan the day around. Public visits take place from 11am to 12 noon every day except 25 December and must be booked directly with the Trust in advance. Visitor places are limited, same-day booking is not available, and the session cannot be delayed or extended for late arrivals.

Groups

We arrange trips for extended families, school and university groups, churches, clubs and corporate teams.

Groups of ten adult passengers travelling together may qualify for special airline rates, arranged with the airline and subject to availability. The earlier we have your numbers and dates, the better the chance of holding something suitable.

For larger groups, we handle rooming lists, dietary requirements, multiple arrival times and a single point of contact so you are not fielding questions from twenty people.

When to Go

School holidays are the obvious constraint and also the busiest periods, so book early. July and August in the Mara, and December on the coast, fill well in advance.
