A long layover, early arrival or late departure can all be turned into something, and we arrange tours by the half-day for exactly this reason.
Plan My SafariNairobi
Nairobi National Park borders the city and holds rhino, lion and giraffe against a skyline. A morning there is a genuine game drive, not a substitute for one.
The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Nairobi Nursery hand-raises orphaned elephants. Public visits take place from 11am to 12 noon every day except 25 December and must be booked directly with the Trust in advance. Visitor places are limited, same-day booking is not available, and the session cannot be delayed or extended for late arrivals. Plan the day around it.
The Giraffe Centre at Langata, Karen Blixen Museum, Bomas of Kenya and Nairobi National Museum each take an hour or two.
For shopping, the Maasai Market moves around the city by day of the week. Kazuri Beads in Karen is a working women's cooperative that visitors can tour.
Mombasa
Old Town and Fort Jesus are best seen on foot with a guide who knows the Portuguese, Omani and British layers of the city. Add spice markets, Swahili architecture and good food.
Kigali
Clean, safe and walkable. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is the reason many visitors go, and it deserves proper time rather than an hour squeezed in before a flight.
Inema Arts Centre and city markets are worth adding.
Entebbe and Kampala
The botanical gardens at Entebbe make a good stop before a flight. Kampala is busier and rewards a guide.
